May I have some Vanilla Shmear with that?

Let me set the scene for you… my bestie and I went on a mini girls night out in Downtown Greensboro searching for a place that neither of us have been to. We’re chilling in the car listening to Khalid and my friend says… “Dame’s Chicken and Waffles.” So Dame’s Chicken and Waffles it was.

We parked about a block away and walked up on this beautiful deep red brick building. The area reminded us both of a miniature New Orleans. Immediately upon walking in, we were seated and ordered our drinks. That sweet tea was everything. The place felt like a mom and pop joint with it’s draw of people of all ages. We knew we were in for a treat.

Each of us ordered something different (because what psychopaths order the same thing on the menu!?). I patiently awaited “the barnyard honcho” and Alexis, the “what a classy hen” dish. We were staring at other folks’ food while waiting (it looked so good we just couldn’t help it) and we were getting excited. I have to say to anyone who wants good soul food – this place is most certainly for you.

Finally, our food was ready and in front of us, waiting for us to dig in. Now, you might still be wondering, “what is vanilla shmear?” Well, let me tell you it is flavored butter sent straight from God to the mind of the man that is Dame. SO GOOD! It paired perfectly with the chicken and waffle. I never knew I needed this place until I bit into that chicken. It was juicy and seasoned so well that I didn’t need hot sauce, ketchup, ranch, etc. No condiments. None. The dish also came with eggs and grits. In addition to all of that, I ordered Ceci’s Mac and Cheese after I saw it in passing on someone else’s table on the way to our own. Who you know seasons their mac and cheese with oregano and it works for them? I’ll wait.

Y’all need to try this place. 100% recommended by yours truly. We left that place stuffed. No boxes to take home because we couldn’t stop eating but we probably should have (you’ll see it was a ton of food). We ended the night on a chase to see the infamous Jeks street art around our city. Recently, Jeks has done murals of the late and great Mac Miller, Stan Lee and Nipsey Hussle. He also did one of one of my favs, Billie Eilish which we couldn’t find because he’s marked it a hidden gem. These are also a must see if you’re in the Greensboro area. Realism at its finest.

Let me know what you think of this review. Have you ever been to Dame’s Chicken and Waffles? What did you get and should I try it? Leave your comments and suggestions on this post or in the “Let’s Talk, Foodie.” tab. MUCH LOVE, foodie friends!

xoxo, Caitlin

  1. Good Lord that makes me want to eat there…great pictures, great post. Eloquently written. Keep on keeping the public informed of these hidden gems. Did they have any vegan options? Inquiring minds want to know.

  2. They do indeed have vegan options which they mentioned when they were explaining the menu to us. I know they have a vegan waffle but I didn’t ask about what other vegan items they had. I will be sure to ask these types of questions for future posts. Thanks for the feedback!
